flimsy pole broke within 1 month while canopy was closed, May 8, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Strathwood Basics Dark Wood Market Umbrella, Beige (Lawn & Patio) My wife and I were happy with the look and ease-of-use of this umbrella. Since it was a Christmas present and we live in Ohio we waited until April to setup the umbrella on our existing patio table using a new heavy cast iron base that we also purchased. All was good and we were looking forward to a summer under it's shade, but weather was very rainy, so after the 1st day we closed the umbrella and were waiting for better spring weather to arrive. Within a month, the pole snapped off during a storm right at the point where the pole extends through the center hole of the table. I could understand it snapping if the canopy was open, or if the wind was excessive, but this was a run-of-the-mill spring storm and the canopy was closed. Apparently this pole is too cheap to withstand the weight of the canopy and a gust of wind. The pole is made of cheap light wood with no reinforcement whatsoever. Honestly, it's intended for outdoor use, so you'd think the pole would withstand the outdoor... Read more

You can stand under my umbrella (but it does not tilt and the base is NOT included), April 10, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Strathwood Basics Dark Wood Market Umbrella, Beige (Lawn & Patio) This is a pretty, simple, graceful, old-fashioned, light umbrella that is represents pretty good value for the price, considering the alternatives. It does not come with the base shown in the picture and, unlike most 'mainstream' umbrellas, it does not tilt.
Other than the polyester canopy (a good thing) and the plastic finial, there is very little high-tech in this umbrella. The canopy is held up with a brass pin and an old-fashioned pulley system is used to raise or lower it. The 2-piece pole and the ribs are made of what seems to be good quality hard but light wood.
Overall, I like it but, unlike a heavy-duty, aluminum pole umbrella, I am not just folding it during storms but taking it indoors because I'm afraid it would break if I left it outside. I am going to rate it as a four-star with 'good value' and 'old fashioned elegance' as positives but taking out one star for the misleading picture, the lack of a tilt capability and some durability concerns.

Snapped right in half on a windless day, May 6, 2011 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Strathwood Basics Dark Wood Market Umbrella, Beige (Lawn & Patio) This umbrella broke withing two days of putting it out. Weirdest part is that it was closed and I heard a big crashing sound. Looked outside and the darn thing was broken in half. Took pictures and will report this to amazon. It seems like the top half of the umbrella is too heavy for the wood stick.
I recommend buying a aluminum stand type. I'm really disappointed because I was so looking forward to spending wonderful day on the deck underneath it. The fabric portion of the umbrella looked beautiful.
